How To Pick The Right Golf Ball For Your Game

Deciding what golf ball is going to best suit your game can feel like a hit and miss affair when you start out in your golfing career. There are so many different options to choose from that even just narrowing it down can feel like a daunting task. Read on for information on which balls are best for you.

Tour Level / High Spin Golf Balls

Much like anything in life, what are considered the best golf balls are also the most expensive. The strange thing about golf is that the best golf balls may not be the best for your game and could do more harm than good, especially when you are still a novice player. Anyone starting out in golf is going to lose plenty of balls, there is no avoiding it, it’s just the nature of the beast. When you first pick up a club and head out onto your local course, I would recommend choosing quantity over quality.

Best of Both - Distance & Control Golf Balls

There are some excellent value deals on the lower cost golf balls (often called distance balls) and buying these will have less of an impact on your pocket and reduce the amount of distress when one is lost in a bush or a pond. Losing lots of golf balls is a rite of passage on the way to becoming a better player. Accept that this will happen and buy your balls accordingly.  The lowest cost golf balls are usually a two-piece ball. They will feel quite hard when you strike them, and you will not create much backspin on your chip shots around the green. Lower cost balls do not rob you of distance, but they do rob you of some feel.

Distance Golf Balls

As you progress and your golf game improves, then it is worth looking at the next step up in the quality of golf ball. The mid-range golf balls are generally made using a three-piece construction and this extra layer gives them a substantially softer feel then the distance balls. The strike will feel better and you will start to get more feedback from the club at impact. They will also spin more, so you should notice that your chips and pitches onto the green stop a little more quickly than before.

Ladies Golf Balls

Once you have start to play to around a mid-handicap, you will be tempted to move onto the tour-level balls such as the famous Pro V1.  The cost does jump up significantly here and losing one really does hurt you deep down in your soul. Tour balls won’t necessarily feel any softer than the mid-range balls, but they will spin significantly more on iron shots and around the green. Due to their five-layer construction they spin less on driver shots and offer you the best of both worlds. Maximum distance on tee shots, and the ultimate in control when approaching the green. There is no real need to rush into using Tour level balls though, they will only benefit your game when your ball-striking reaches a consistent level. The mid-range pool of golf balls are where the majority of golfers should buy from.
