Golf ball retrievers have been around for a number of years now and manufacturers are constantly improving them by making them lighter, stronger and with a longer reach. Many of them now will allow you to rescue your ball from some reasonably deep water. As long as you can see the ball there is now a fighting chance of recovery. 

With an easy to use mechanism, they are quickly extended to the required length and then the ball is collected using the cleverly designed sphere at the end. Once the ball is safely scooped up into the sphere simply lift the retriever out of the water and the golf ball now lives to fight another day. Golf ball retrievers are equally adept at rescuing balls from thick and otherwise inaccessible bushes.
