TAYLORMADE SIM DRIVING IRON HYBRID
The driving iron has been improved and modified significantly over the past decade or so as they found huge popularity with tour players across the globe. Golf manufacturers started to focus more of their research and development on making this style of club as easy to use and as effective at its job as possible.
TaylorMade Golf have been at the forefront of this development and have found great success with their UDI’s with the RSI UDI being the first one to really make a lasting impression. With much larger heads than their long iron cousins, and with a hollow body construction they opened up a whole new world for players who had previously struggle to hit 3 and 4 irons.
TaylorMade have been instrumental with many of the advancements in the golf driving iron and their range of GAP-R clubs was a completely fresh idea of driving irons, with different heads for different players.
The new TaylorMade Sim driving iron range has continued with this concept but it is now offered in a much sleeker and more refined package. There are two different heads available, the SIM UDI driving iron and SIM DHY Hybrid iron. Let's take a look at the SIM DHY Hybrid iron.
The TaylorMade SIM DHY hybrid iron, as the name might suggest, is a mix between a driving iron and a hybrid. It is the more forgiving of the two heads as it has a larger profile, slightly more offset and a thicker topline than the UDI. The centre of gravity is lower and further away from the face due to the use of a lighter and less dense SpeedFoam. This has created a club that is easier to launch and one that produces a higher flight than other driving irons. The shaft in DHY has a slightly softer tip which will again help with launch.
The leading edge on the DHY has been redesigned to allow for better turf interaction and aids ball striking from imperfect lies on the fairway, out of the rough and also in fairway bunkers. As with the UDI, the DHY looks absolutely superb and carries the theme of the full SIM range through in its design. With a forged C300 face it also feels superb at impact.
As with the UDI the shaft length is now more in keeping with that of a longer iron than a hybrid. Extensive research has shown that the jump in length of shafts from a 5-iron to a 4-driving iron caused problems with average players and so the shaft length has been reduced to flow better into the irons.
The TaylorMade SIM DHY hybrid iron is a superb looking club that offers the ultimate in playability for a driving iron. If you have been thinking about getting one but not sure you are good enough to use one then this could well be the solution.
