Playing into the wind
As long we continue to play golf outdoors (should be quite a while on that one!), there will always be the element of wind to contend with!
In the amateur game, it's a common occurrence to continue hitting the same club you always do on a particular hole. If the wind in in your face though, that doesn't normally end well. Another common issue is simply trying to hit the ball harder. This isn't great either, as you will impart a load more backspin onto the shot, resulting in it climbing higher and stalling, falling short of your target.
Here's a few little tips to help you get to grips with hitting into the wind:
- Take an extra club or two (depending on the strength of the wind)
- Move the ball back in your stance a little
- Grip down the shaft
- Make a slightly shorter swing on both sides of the ball
- Most importantly - swing a 3/4 pace
These tips will help you take the spin off the ball, keep the ball flight down and give you a more controlled, penetrating flight through the wind.
Have fun!
