Born from one of the more famous familial disagreements in history, PUMA was one of the two results of Rudolf and Adi Dassler separating the company they started in 1924.  The story is a fascinating one, as detailed so brilliantly by Barbara Smit in her book Pitch Invasion.

Both brothers were born in Herzogenaurach, not far from Nuremberg, Germany but since the acrimonious familial split in 1948, the town was pretty much divided too!  It has cleared up a lot these days but for many years adidas and PUMA employees would not associate with each other.  The town's two amateur football teams are on different sides too!  ASV Herzogenaurach were supported by Adidas, while FC Herzogenaurach endorsed PUMA.  The most sad fact about all this?  Even when Adi and Rudolf died, they were buried in opposite ends of the local cemetery.

Sibling rivalry aside, PUMA is a brand with an astonishing history of sporting brilliance.  From Johan Cruyff sending the world the other way with his 'turn' to Diego Maradona blazing a trail through world football to Usain Bolt smashing every record he looked at, it's all been done in PUMA footwear.

From a golfing perspective, the brand has seen a huge surge in popularity over the last 10 years.  After turning Professional in 2009, Rickie Fowler quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his youthful exuberance and dress sense.  After signing with PUMA in September 2010, both Rickie's and the brand's fortunes skyrocketed with Rickie's signature headwear and Sunday orange outfits being extremely popular.

As mentioned elsewhere in our Blog, technology has moved on a huge amount in golf clothing and footwear in recent years and PUMA are certainly a large contributor to that progression.  Technologies include Cloudspun, DryCELL and MATTR which are all engineered to help golfers be more comfortable, reduce fatigue and at the end of the day, play better golf.
