Golf Jargon explained!
- 3 Jig - see 3 Putt below
- 3 Whack - see 3 Putt below
- 3 Putt - to take 3 putts on one hole
- Air Shot - a shot where no contact is made with the ball
- Albatross - a score of 3 under par on one hole
- Bent nail - see snap hook below
- Birdie - a score of 1 under par on one hole
- Blob - a score of zero points in Stableford play
- Bogey - a score of 1 over par on one hole
- Boycott - a straight shot a long way right
- Dormie - when you are the same number of holes ahead as remain in Matchplay
- Double Bogey - a score of 2 over par on one hole
- Draw - a shot that curves from right to left
- Eagle - a score of 2 under par on one hole
- Fade - a shot that curves from left to right
- Fat - hitting the ground before the ball
- Flier - a shot that flies further than expected out of the rough
- "FORE!" - a polite but loud shout when you are worried a ball may nearly hit someone
- Free Drop - picking your ball up from a particular spot and dropping it without penalty
- Fresh Air - see Air Shot above
- Gimme - a putt that your opponent 'gives' to you, i.e is so close doesn't need to be holed
- Head Off - a loss of temper or display of anger
- Head Off Merchant - a person who is known for losing their temper
- Hosel Rocket - see Shank below
- Jumper - see Flier above
- Knife - to thin a shot so dramatically it flies very low and very far
- Knock Down - see Punch below
- Matchplay - an event where you play for each hole rather than counting individual shots
- Medal - an event where you count every shot you take
- Mudball - a ball with a large amount of mud on it that may cause a skewed shot
- Mulligan - an extra ball played without counting the original
- Nobbed - a shot of particular poor standard
- NR - to No Return in medal play, i.e to give up
- Nutted - see Punished below
- Par - a score of par on one hole
- Penalty - a missed short putt
- Penalty Drop - picking your ball up from a particular spot and dropping it with penalty
- Pipe - see Shank below
- Provisional - an extra ball played in case you can't find your original
- Punch - a play a shot lower than it would normally fly
- Punished - a shot that was hit brilliantly, right out of the middle
- Quadruple Bogey - a score of 4 over par on one hole
- Quad - see Quadruple Bogey
- Shank - a shot hit from the hosel that veers dramatically to the right
- Slice - a shot that moves quickly from left to right
- Snap hook - a shot that moves viciously from right to left
- Snowman - a score of 8 on one hole
- Stableford - an event where strokes are turned into points on each hole
- Stiff - a shot hit to within a couple of feet of the hole
- Stone Dead - see Stiff above
- Stinger - like a Punch above but played with a very long club, usually a 2 iron or 3 Wood
- Strokeplay - see Medal above
- Texas Wedge - to use a putter instead of chipping when off the green
- Thin - hitting too high up the ball causing a very low shot
- Top - hitting the very top of the ball causing it to run along the ground
- Toe Shank - a shot hit from the extreme toe edge resulting in a sideways shot
- Triple Bogey - a score of 3 over par on one hole
