TaylorMade Golf Wedges
If you want to become a short game wizard then a big step towards doing that is having great golf wedges that perform well, and match your style of play. There are lots of excellent wedges available now and, with so many different options on the market, it can sometimes be difficult to know where to start.
There are different head finishes, different lofts, different bounce angles and different grinds all of which can
(Read More)Loft is the most self-explanatory and is the angle of the face which determines how high, and how far the ball will go. The highest loft allowed in a wedge in 64 degrees. This loft of club is used more in other countries than the UK as, the generally wet turf conditions here, make this loft really tricky to use effectively. If you are looking for a lob wedge then a 58 or 60 degree is the best place to start.
Bounce angle is the amount the club sits off the floor at address. The amount of bounce of each wedge is usually shown on the sole of the club near the loft. The higher the bounce, the more the club will sit off the floor at address. High bounce is great for bunker shots as it stops the club digging into the sand and it’s also effective in wet conditions. If your golf wedge is going to be mainly used for chipping and pitching rather than bunker play, be careful not to go too high with the bounce as it makes a precise strike more difficult. Mid bounce of around 10 degrees is excellent for versatility and allows the wedge to be used effectively from most ground conditions.
The grind of the wedge is similar to bounce. It will affect the way the club interacts with the turf or sand. Some golf wedges will have flat spots on the sole to enable sliding the club under the ball on delicate flop shots. There is a lot of personal preference when it comes to choosing the grind but as a general rule the more rounded the sole the more margin for error you will have.
Wedges also come in a variety of finishes. Some will be black, some chrome, some copper and some will have a raw finish that rusts over time. Each finish gives the wedge a different feel off the face. Performance overall will be similar across all finishes; the selection is more down to the way each individual prefers their wedge to look and feel.
TaylorMade offers a great collection of golf wedges covering all the options listed above. As a top tier golf brand, you can be sure that these tour proven wedges will give you the performance you require.
